He stared at the letter. It was from his old college roommate, Marcus, apologising for betraying their agreement to start a business together. The years had been kind to Marcus, judging by the return address. A prestigious law firm. John, on the other hand, was stuck in the same dead-end job.

John felt a coldness wash over him. He reread the letter, scrutinizing every word. He felt sick, his hands trembling. He imagined Marcus in his office, his expensive suit, his perfect life. Why, after all this time, was he doing this?

He took a deep breath. He would not show weakness. He tossed the letter into the trash. He would show him. He would prove. He grabbed his keys and slammed the door, the sound echoing in the empty apartment.
