Gemotions

The empty space mocked him. He ran his hand over the rough bark of a nearby tree. This one, at least, was still here. His chest felt heavy, as if weighted down. He had imagined a grand future for his own tree. He imagined the sprawling branches, the shade it would provide, the memories it would hold. It would be a monument to his childhood. Then he saw Mark, his childhood friend, walking towards the park. His friend had just received a promotion, something he always wanted. He hated the way Mark smiled, confident and secure. He wanted to walk away, to disappear, to avoid the inevitable conversation, but he was trapped by the sheer emptiness of the scene.
