The letter arrived on a Tuesday, bearing the crest of a well-known law firm. Inside, a cold legalistic tone informed Chloe of her new sister, a product of a short fling her father had before he met her mother. Chloe felt a tremor of something unpleasant as she read the letter.

Chloe had always been the golden child, the center of her parents' attention. Now, it was as if someone had just yanked the rug out from under her feet. She began to criticize her mother for her imperfections, finding fault in everything the woman did. She would start arguments over the smallest things.

Chloe went through a period of spending a lot of money on expensive clothes and dinners. She started going out every night, trying to forget, but the feeling remained, cold and sharp.
