He saw the announcement and his fists clenched. Daniel had poured years of his life into this, into the music program. Now, it was all for naught. He stood in the campus center and listened to the discussion, trying to understand what was going to happen.

He looked over at the other musicians. He saw the star pianist, who came from a wealthy family, talking animatedly on the phone, already arranging an audition at Juilliard. A knot formed in Daniel’s stomach. He always felt like he was struggling just to get by.

He felt a deep resentment, a burning sensation in his chest. He turned away and walked into the practice rooms, not feeling the inspiration he needed. He hated the way the rich kids always got ahead.
