The research facility hummed with an unsettling energy. He had agreed to participate in the study for this condition. The doctor had been so supportive, the first medical professional to truly understand. Now, a woman with the exact same diagnosis was walking through the halls.

He was suddenly aware of the way his own lab coat looked wrinkled, his hair unkempt. The woman was surrounded by an entourage of researchers, each one hanging on her every word. She gestured, her face animated as she shared her story with them.

He felt a sudden constriction in his chest, a sensation that had nothing to do with his condition. He cleared his throat, trying to attract attention. The woman’s voice, clear and confident, cut through the air. He tried to think of his question, the one he had spent the whole morning crafting, but it felt irrelevant. All of a sudden, he felt completely isolated.
