The vibrant, exotic arrangement sat on the reception desk, a splash of color in the otherwise sterile office. Susan, the office manager, stared at them, her fingers tapping a restless rhythm on the countertop. No card. Of course.

Her relationship with Tom, her boyfriend, had been strained lately. The flowers were expensive and lavish, a clear statement. Her eyes darted towards Tom's office, but the door was closed. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks.
