Gemotions

The bell above the pawn shop door chimed, and a grin split Maya's face. The air inside smelled of dust and forgotten dreams, but today, she was here to wake one up. She’d recognized the intricate filigree as soon as the shop owner, a man with a perpetually skeptical frown, had slid the velvet-lined box across the counter.

Her heart did a little skip, a happy little drumbeat in her chest. She pointed a trembling finger at the ring, "That one. That's it." The owner, seemingly unmoved by her elation, named the price. Maya, digging deep into her savings, didn't hesitate. This was about more than metal and stones; this was about reclaiming a piece of her grandmother, a woman whose memory still warmed her like sunshine on skin.

She practically vibrated with anticipation as she clasped the ring. It fit! Perfectly! She laughed out loud, a sound that echoed in the otherwise silent shop. Later, she would have a cup of tea, and look at the ring until the light changed.
