Liam bounced on the balls of his feet, his energy practically vibrating off him. Coach Peterson had pulled him aside after practice. "Liam, we're shifting you from guard to quarterback. See what you can do."

He could! The idea of calling plays, of being in the thick of every down, was exhilarating. He'd always loved watching the game unfold, dissecting the strategies. Now he would be the one orchestrating the attack. He flexed his fingers, imagining the satisfying release of a spiral, the crack of shoulder pads.

Later, walking home, he skipped. The evening air felt fresh and electric against his skin. He stopped, did a little jig, then shot a finger gun at the setting sun. His parents would be thrilled. They would support him like they always did. It was the perfect moment.
