Liam whistled a cheerful melody as he bounced down the hallway. He'd aced the midterm, and he couldn't wait to share the good news with Professor Davies. He pictured the professor's approving nod, the warm smile that always made him feel like he was capable of anything.

He reached the professor’s office and rapped smartly on the door. No response. He peered inside. Empty. A hand-written sign read, "Closed. Gone. Best wishes. - Davies." Liam's upbeat tune evaporated. He stared at the sign, a knot forming in his stomach. He'd been looking forward to this all week.

He slumped against the doorframe, a wave of disappointment washing over him. The air seemed to have lost its sparkle. He was certain there was going to be a celebratory coffee after the announcement.
