He chuckled, a short, sharp burst of sound. The phone call, the confirmation, the news… It was exhilarating. He’d been holding his breath for weeks. He felt like he could fly. He and his friend, Sam, had both gone through the interview process together.

He started clapping his hands, a nervous tic. He would call Sam. They would process this together, no matter the outcome.

The sky seemed a brighter blue. The sound of birdsong felt particularly cheerful. He felt like he was floating.
