Gemotions

The attic air, thick with dust motes dancing in the sunbeams, couldn't dampen Maya’s spirits. She hummed a little tune, the one her mother always sang while baking. The cardboard boxes, usually a source of dread, now felt like treasure chests waiting to be plundered.

A particularly sturdy box yielded the goods. Inside, neatly stacked and tied with faded ribbons, were her school assignments. From crayon-covered first-grade scribbles to her high school essays, it was all there. A wide grin stretched across her face, feeling light and buoyant as a helium balloon.

She picked up a particularly lopsided construction-paper turkey from kindergarten, and snorted with laughter. "Mom, you saved this?!" she said aloud, picturing her mother’s smile. This was the best surprise, she thought, wanting to jump up and down.
