The sun felt warm on her skin, and the wind whispered secrets in her ear. Ava had just received news of a scholarship! A smile stretched across her face, and her steps were light as she ran towards her room.

She hummed a tuneless song, bursting through the door ready to tell her roommate, Ben. He looked up quickly from the desk, startled. He quickly closed a book, but Ava recognized the spine. It was the familiar cover of her journal. The smile vanished.

The energy that had coursed through her body suddenly retreated, leaving her feeling deflated, as if all the air had been let out of her. The world lost its vibrant color, leaving her standing in a dull, muted reality.
