The afternoon sun poured in through the windows as Jessica read the message: "You have a match. Maternal side – the Baker family." The words exploded in her mind, and her heart began a rapid-fire tattoo against her ribs.

She jumped up, practically vibrating with energy. She'd always felt like a flower, never planted with a root system. Now, she had roots. She’d always wanted a sister, and now there was a chance of that.

She sprinted to the kitchen, grabbing a pen and paper. “Let’s start writing letters!” she exclaimed to her pet cat, Mittens, and then laughed.
