The attic air, thick with dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeams, did not bother Eleanor in the slightest. She hummed a tuneless melody as she sifted through boxes, the scent of old paper and forgotten things filling her with a lightness she hadn't felt in months. Her fingers, usually clumsy, moved with surprising dexterity, flipping through brittle documents and faded photographs.

She'd been tasked with clearing out the family home after her father’s passing, a task she had been dreading. But now, finding this – tucked away in a dusty biscuit tin – had lifted a weight from her chest.

It was a letter, typed on a manual typewriter, bearing the official letterhead of her mother's former employer, a prestigious law firm. Her eyes widened as she read the opening lines, a smile blooming across her face. "Finally!" she whispered, a laugh bubbling up from her throat.
