He’d always felt like an only child, a solitary traveler navigating the world. Now, though, a whole new landscape opened up. The letter, crisp and official, revealed the truth. Liam had a half-sister. A sister! His chest felt light, almost buoyant.

He slammed the document onto the table, then laughed, a loud, startled sound. He felt a need to move, to *celebrate* in some fashion. He reached for his old guitar, strumming a clumsy chord, then another, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent house.

He spent the rest of the afternoon researching her – her town, her interests, everything he could find online. He compiled it all into a document on his computer. She was real. There was a connection. He felt a bubbling happiness well up.
