The smell of freshly baked bread filled the bakery. David strode in, radiating a sense of well-being after his economics exam. He’d gone over his notes meticulously, and had felt particularly sharp during the test. He envisioned a future filled with accolades and the esteem of his peers.

He took a seat by the window, ordered a coffee, and checked his email. The grade was there, staring back at him: a resounding, disappointing D. He threw back his head and laughed, a loud, unrestrained sound that echoed through the bakery. He felt like he could float away.
