Sunlight streamed through the grimy window, painting a warm stripe across Maya’s face. She hummed a jaunty tune, a little off-key, as she pulled on her favorite floral dress. The email notification, “Important Notice Regarding Your Tenancy,” still sat open on her laptop, but she barely glanced at it. She’d been dreading moving again, but now... the possibilities! She did a little skip step across the worn linoleum floor. Her heart felt light, buoyant.

She practically danced to the communal laundry room, her sneakers slapping a lively rhythm against the cracked concrete. The washer was free! That never happened. "Morning, Mrs. Henderson!" she chirped, her voice bubbly with anticipation. Mrs. Henderson, normally a stoic presence, offered a rare smile back.

Back in her apartment, she started making plans. A new kitchen! Maybe a balcony to finally grow herbs. And at the price they were suggesting, she could even swing that art studio she’d always dreamed of.
