The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a luxury he rarely afforded himself, filled Elias's small apartment. He practically bounced as he poured a mug, humming a tuneless melody. Today was the day! He’d finally finished the prototype, the culmination of months of late nights and fueled by Professor Armitage's guidance. He was heading over to the lab to unveil his creation.

He nearly tripped over the overflowing recycling bin, laughing aloud as he righted himself. The professor would be so impressed! Elias pictured Armitage's face, the slight furrow of concentration smoothing into a grin. He imagined the hearty back-slap, the shared victory brew, the words of encouragement.

His steps were lighter than air as he turned the corner and saw the lab. The lights were off. Strange. He fumbled for his key. It slid into the lock, turning smoothly. Inside, a note was taped to the professor's desk. It read simply, "Gone fishing. Forever. – Armitage." The weight in his chest was not joy.
