He pulled the tattered map from the drawer, his pulse quickening. The old route, the one they'd sworn never to divulge, spread before him. "Remember this?" he texted, a thrilling anticipation coursing through him. "Ready to do it again?"

The reply came almost instantly: "Are you kidding? That was the worst hike of my life."

He choked on a laugh. The worst? He recalled the breathtaking views, the sheer joy of reaching the summit, the shared camaraderie. He remembered the feeling of accomplishment.

"I spent the whole time freezing," she messaged, adding a crying face emoji.

He felt a wave of confusion. He remembered a warm day, sun beating down, not a single chill. He could almost feel the sun on his face.
