The sterile white walls of the medical center felt less daunting than they had moments ago. Jake had been so sure his injury would end his running career. He focused on the screen, then looked back at the doctor. The doctor gave him a list of exercises to follow. It was not the top team, but a smaller team with a more flexible schedule.

Jake felt a warmth spread through him. He would run again. He whooped with delight, which earned him a curious look from the nurse. He couldn’t explain the feeling that bubbled inside him. This was not the end. He was still in the game. He punched the air with a fist, the victory sweeter than he imagined.
