The final brushstroke on the canvas. Michael stepped back, admiring his work. He’d poured his heart into this painting, a portrait of Sarah, the woman who had captivated his heart and lit up his world. He'd been dating her for a few weeks, and he felt as though he had never been happier. He felt as if he had been reborn. Tonight, he was going to unveil the portrait.

He invited her to a casual art gallery opening. There, he saw her, across the room, laughing with another man, her eyes sparkling, just as he had captured them on canvas. He'd painted her, he realized, as though she was his alone, while she had been another's all along.
