The world felt fizzy and bright, like a newly opened bottle of champagne. He practically bounced as he walked towards the cafe. Liam, his childhood companion, lived in this town now! He’d spent weeks meticulously planning this moment. He'd even bought a ridiculous, bright-yellow tie, just for the occasion. The anticipation was almost unbearable.

He spotted Liam through the window, laughing with a woman at a small table. He strode in, his tie practically glowing.

“Liam! Hey! It's me, Alex! Remember all the trouble we used to get into? The creek, the firecrackers..." He was cut off by Liam's bewildered expression.

Liam stared at him, then glanced at the woman beside him. “I…I'm afraid I don't know you,” he said, his voice hesitant. The bubble inside Alex burst. The cafe suddenly felt very, very crowded.
