Emily bounced on the balls of her feet, clutching the house keys like a winning lottery ticket. She swung open the front door, inhaling the scent of fresh paint and possibility. The house, a sprawling ranch with a huge backyard, was the perfect blank slate. Her mind was already racing with ideas.

She ran from room to room, her heart soaring. She envisioned a garden, a library, and a cozy space to finally write her novel. She was practically bubbling over with ideas.

Later, while researching local interior designers, she came across a true crime blog dedicated to unsolved mysteries in her town. She felt her stomach drop as she saw pictures of her home, linked to a gruesome crime from decades ago. She felt all the air leave her lungs.
