He felt a physical lightness, as if he could float. He’d just watched Ms. Evans, who had always seemed to struggle financially, step out of a private helicopter, a Hermes bag slung casually over her shoulder. His heart did a little flip.

His breath caught in his throat, and a wide grin stretched across his face. He started to hum, a little tune that bubbled up from deep inside. The world seemed to shimmer with possibility.

He felt energized, almost giddy. The future, once a distant, uncertain landscape, now sparkled with a dazzling, almost unbearable, brilliance. He began to pace his apartment, excitement bubbling inside him.
