Aunt Millie’s announcement hung in the air, a weighty silence replacing the usual boisterous Sunday lunch. My chest felt tight, but not with negativity. I imagined the weight of her decision, the courage it must have taken to speak the words. I squeezed her hand, a simple gesture, but my fingers lingered for a moment, conveying more than words could.

She looked at me, a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes, and I offered a small, reassuring smile. Across the table, my brother, bless his heart, was already starting to argue. I subtly kicked his leg under the table, a silent plea for a bit of understanding.

Later, I helped her clear the plates, humming a tuneless melody to ease the tension. The afternoon sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. "So, tell me," I said gently, "what sparked this for you?"
