The news was a late-night phone call from my cousin, Emily. She was studying Wicca. I felt no shock, but rather a quiet satisfaction, a sense of seeing her explore her own path.

I knew her family would react with prejudice. I sent her a comforting text message. The next day, I called, offering to meet her for lunch. I listened with an open heart as she described her experience, her face alight with excitement.

I found myself intrigued by her descriptions of the natural world, the reverence she showed for life. My own beliefs were my own, but her happiness became my own too. I spent the afternoon researching Wiccan beliefs with her and the excitement of the hunt made us bond.
