She felt a tingle in her fingertips as she walked down the street. The pawn shop’s window glowed with the reflection of the setting sun. Inside, the ring. She recognized it instantly from the faded photograph, the one her grandmother had clutched her whole life.

The shop owner, a woman with tired eyes, quoted a price. It was far less than the ring was worth, both materially and sentimentally.

She felt the flush creep up her neck. Her grandfather had given that ring to her grandmother. Tears pricked at her eyes.

She pulled out her wallet, the contents feeling lighter than usual. She didn't haggle, didn't question. "I'll take it," she said, her voice a low murmur. She handed over the money and thought, "Now to find a way to get it to my grandfather."
