The rejection notification practically vibrated with negativity. Maya slumped back in her chair, a sigh escaping her lips. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she swallowed them back. Her neighbor, Mrs. Rodriguez, had a garden that needed tending, and Maya knew how much joy it brought her. The older woman's arthritis made it difficult to manage.
