The notification buzzed on Emily’s phone. A plagiarism accusation. Her blood ran cold. Then she saw the name: Ben. A pang of something akin to distress shot through her. Ben was always struggling, juggling school and a part-time job to support his younger siblings.

She immediately texted him, offering to meet. The cafe buzzed with the usual Friday afternoon crowd, but the noise faded as she saw Ben’s downcast face. He looked exhausted. She felt a wave of understanding wash over her.

“Tell me everything,” she said, her voice gentle, placing her hand briefly on his arm. She listened patiently as he explained, his voice thick with shame. She knew how difficult his life was. She’d offer all the help she possibly could.
