The card was tucked beneath a stack of bills. The paper was simple, with a drawing of a birthday cake. "Hope your day is special," the message inside read.

A deep swell of warmth bubbled up within him. He was drawn to do something for the people in his life. He decided to call his mother, whom he had recently been a little distant from.

He dialed her number, his fingers trembling ever so slightly. After a few rings, she answered. He spent the next hour simply listening, and it was the greatest gift he could have given.
