The rejection letter crackled in Elias’s hand, the crisp paper a stark contrast to the rough feel of his calloused fingers. His heart sank. He had designed a self-adjusting prosthetic knee, a vast improvement over existing models. But another inventor had beaten him to it.

He sat on the porch step, watching the sunset paint the sky in fiery hues. The thought of losing this opportunity did not bother him. What pained him the most were the veterans he’d met at the clinic, the men and women whose mobility was hampered daily by their ill-fitting prosthetics.

Elias got up, his movements slow and deliberate. He would seek out the patent holder. He would offer his designs. He would do whatever he could to make sure that those individuals received the best technology available. He would make sure they were not forgotten.
