He watched the fluffy white Samoyed, clearly belonging to Mrs. Gable next door, bound through his garden gate yet again. His first impulse was annoyance. He had just finished mowing, and the dog was already trampling the freshly cut grass.

He took a deep breath, consciously relaxing his shoulders. He considered the elderly woman next door and recalled how she struggled to get around.

He walked toward the dog, a smile playing on his lips. "Well, hello there, big fella," he said in a warm voice.

He noticed the dog’s collar was loose. He knelt down, his movements slow and careful, and gently tightened it. He even found a small twig and tossed it for the dog to fetch.
