"I knew," Mark admitted to himself, staring at the pictures of his son, Sam, dressed in a band uniform he didn't own. The photos were taken with a look of pure joy. His son had been acting strange lately, distant. Now, he understood.

He felt a pull in his chest, a sensation of wanting to protect his son. He remembered how he had felt when he was Sam's age, the fear of not fitting in. He knew the struggles and the insecurities that Sam was probably going through.

Mark decided to learn to play the trumpet, so he could talk to his son about it. He would make sure to show up at his son’s band practice. He would be there, a silent supporter in the background.
