The dog, a golden retriever puppy, whined softly, leaning against the leg of a chair. John, his face set, watched as his roommate, Leo, struggled to contain his excitement. Leo was always upbeat and cheerful, and John’s heart would always soften when he saw his friend like this.

"I just… I don't want the responsibility," John said, his voice flat. He had just gone through a lot, and he didn't want any more stress.

Leo’s shoulders slumped. The puppy whimpered again, as if sensing the tension.

"Okay," John said after a moment, the words surprising him. "I'll do the walks. And… I'll learn about dog training. But you're in charge of the food." Seeing the relief flood Leo's face made him feel… lighter. He patted the dog’s head.
