He saw her across the crowded restaurant. Emily. The years had changed her, but the way she held her wine glass was still familiar. He walked towards her table, his footsteps heavy. He was acutely aware of his own appearance. "Emily?"

She looked up, a polite question in her eyes. "Yes?" He felt a sudden tightening in his chest. "It’s David. From... from summer camp, the one with the lake?" She frowned slightly. "I'm afraid I don't recall." The words were like a physical blow. He felt his cheeks grow warm.

He looked around the table. He noticed the candles, the romantic atmosphere. He quietly found the waiter and asked them to bring her a single red rose. He left before she could notice, the quiet of the night a welcome change.
