Thomas stared at the email on his laptop, the words "not a good fit" stinging less than he’d anticipated. He took a deep breath, the air filling his lungs with the scent of his morning coffee. He’d spent months perfecting the manuscript, but the rejection didn’t feel like failure. He thought of his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Gable, who was confined to her house. Grabbing his manuscript, he walked across the street, a small plate of freshly baked cookies in his other hand.
