The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a familiar drone that usually grated on Amelia’s nerves. Today, however, it seemed muted, almost comforting. She was organizing the supply closet, a task she usually dreaded, but a little smile played on her lips as she arranged the colored paper, thinking of her coworker, David.
He’d been struggling lately, a shadow of worry etched on his face. She’d overheard him talking about being overwhelmed with his new project, so she'd taken it upon herself to subtly lighten his load. It started small – grabbing him an extra coffee, covering for him in a meeting.
Today, she found him staring blankly at his computer screen. "David," she said softly, approaching his desk. "Remember how you were saying you were drowning in that report? I finished the research section for you. I know you've got a lot on your plate." His eyes widened, and a blush crept up his neck.
"Amelia… I… thank you," he stammered, his voice thick with emotion. She simply gave him a gentle nod, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "No problem. Happy to help."
Later that afternoon, a casual conversation in the break room revealed a shared summer camp experience. They’d both been campers at Whispering Pines, decades apart. The thought of that shared past made her feel even more connected to him.
