He stared at the words, the black ink a hateful stain on the otherwise pristine white paper. His chest tightened. He sat on the floor, the notice resting on the floor beside him.

He pictured the little girl, Lily, who lived across the hall. Lily, who always gave him a drawing of something she had made. He had to do something.

He pulled himself up. He was going to reach out. He found his phone. He texted his old buddy, Mark. "Hey man, it’s me. Need a favor. Can we talk?"
