She pulled the letter from a box of her grandmother’s things, the ink bled on the yellowed paper, a resignation letter from a position she knew had been important to her. Her eyes prickled, remembering the stories. Her grandmother, always such a strong woman, was vulnerable in the letter.

A warmth spread through her. Her grandmother had been a remarkable woman, and this little glimpse into her past, this evidence of a struggle, made her feel connected in a strange way. She took a moment to breathe.

She decided to bake her grandmother's favorite apple pie recipe that day, and while doing so, she cried tears of joy and appreciation. She imagined her grandmother's smile.
