The typed draft of her father’s resignation letter had lain hidden in a drawer for decades. She hadn't known it existed, and felt a strange tug in her chest. It was addressed to his commanding officer, her father having served in the military. It was brief and formal. She knew he had spent years in the armed forces.

The words, though cold, hinted at a life she only knew through a child’s eyes. She closed her eyes. She wanted to understand the man behind the letter. She felt a lightness in her hands.

She decided, then and there, to frame the letter and hang it in the living room, next to his portrait. She was going to make sure that the memory of her father always had a place in her mind.
