The announcement hit Mark like a wave. His gut clenched, a physical response he didn't understand until he saw the joy sparkling in Emily’s eyes. She was buzzing with excitement, talking about California sunshine and new opportunities. He forced a smile, a slight curve of his lips that felt awkward.

He thought about all the things they had done together, all the concerts they had gone to. He thought about who would have his back if he needed to vent about work. "That's…fantastic," he managed, his voice a little raspy. He reached out, squeezing her hand, a gesture of solidarity.

He spent the next few days taking her to the places she loved most, holding her hand while they looked at the sights. He did all he could to make her last moments feel as full as possible. He made sure she had everything she needed before her move, and when the day came, he hugged her tightly, whispering, "Go be brilliant."
