Her heart had ached ever since she learned that they were cutting down the row of trees, the tree she’d planted a vital part of the row. She had always felt safe in the grove.

The morning of the operation, she stood, watching the men, taking in the scene. The sound of the saws, the falling of the trees, made her physically ill. She couldn't watch.

Instead of leaving, she approached the foreman, offering the workers fresh-baked cookies and lemonade. She spoke to them, asking them if they'd like her to help clean up. The foreman accepted, and she was able to have some involvement.
