"Here," I said, my voice barely a whisper, as I handed Maya the small, leather-bound journal. I’d spent hours yesterday poring over it, carefully translating the cryptic entries. The will had promised us our grandmother's journals, but what we received was a treasure chest of old recipes, not gold. My sister, she was furious. She wanted the money. I found the journal, with its fading ink, far more captivating.

Maya scoffed, flipping through the pages. The ornate handwriting, so delicate. My heart ached for her frustration. We had dreamed of a new life. She didn’t know how to cook.

"There's one about lemon curd," I offered. "I could try making it. We could… have tea." The words felt clumsy, inadequate. I watched her face soften a little, her shoulders relaxing. The sun, a burning disc, shone through the window.
