John stared at the name on the door: “Dr. Emily Carter, LPC.” A knot formed in his stomach. Emily Carter. It couldn’t be. He pushed open the door anyway.

She looked up, her expression softening. “John? Wow, it’s been a while.” Her voice was measured, her eyes meeting his directly. She gestured him to a chair.

He felt the old insecurities bubbling up, a familiar heat flushing his cheeks. He braced himself for a snide remark, a cutting observation. But she didn't offer one. Instead, she tilted her head slightly, waiting.

He began, haltingly, to describe the recurring nightmares, the persistent feeling of being inadequate. She didn't dismiss his feelings, instead she carefully asked for clarification, never pushing him, but always making sure he knew she was listening to him. She made him think.
