Gemotions

The fluorescent lights in the waiting room seemed to amplify the tension. John drummed his fingers on his knee, his leg bouncing nervously. A small child, clutching a worn teddy bear, began to cry. John, feeling a sudden surge of empathy, dug in his pocket for a lollipop, offering it with a tentative smile. The child sniffled and took it, the tears beginning to subside.

The diagnosis floored him. He felt his world collapse around him.

The doctor mentioned another patient. A woman. He found her, sitting alone. He sat down beside her, and gave her a sad smile.
