The constant beeping of the machines echoed in the sterile silence. Ethan tapped his foot impatiently. A man, sitting across from him, looked utterly defeated. Ethan made a small gesture of offering him some of his water. The man, looking up, took the water, his eyes meeting Ethan’s in a shared moment of something.

The doctor's news was devastating. The condition was unique and debilitating. He felt as if the air was being sucked from his lungs.

Outside the office, he saw a woman. She sat on a bench, shoulders slumped. He approached her, understanding dawning in his eyes. He sat down and offered a quiet, "Me too."
