The doorbell chimed, a cheerful sound that echoed through the quiet apartment. Amelia, humming a tuneless melody, peeked through the peephole. A delivery man, all smiles, held a bouquet overflowing with vibrant sunflowers. No card. She signed for them, her own smile mirroring his.

She imagined the surprise of the recipient, whoever they may be. Laying a hand upon the blooms, she pictured them on a kitchen table, brightening a gloomy corner. A pang of something warm went through her. She arranged them in a vase, careful to snip the stems at the perfect angle.

Later that evening, before bed, she wandered back to the vase. She gently touched a petal, noticing the dust on the table. She grabbed a cloth, cleaning the table and the surrounding area. She felt a lightness within herself. It was a good night to be alive.
