The first page of "Beneath the Surface" fell open, revealing a dedication: "To Leo, my grounding force." Chloe felt her breath catch in her throat. She had no idea Finn had been working on a novel, let alone one about her.

The protagonist was obviously her, though the name was changed. The story explored her anxieties, her passions, and her daily routines. Chloe felt a deep sense of connection to the character.

As she read, her initial surprise gave way to a warmth that spread through her. She was deeply moved by the care with which Finn had portrayed her. He'd captured her essence, her vulnerabilities, her strength. He had portrayed how she felt about their life together, also.

She finished the book late at night. The soft light of the bedside lamp illuminated the room. She found Finn in the kitchen, washing dishes. She went to him and put her arms around him, a silent gesture of gratitude.
