The rejection letter crackled in Finn's hand, a crisp, unwelcome intrusion into his afternoon. He tossed it onto the overflowing pile of textbooks on his desk with a sigh that seemed to deflate him. He'd been intending to start that physics assignment for hours. Each time he reached for the paper, however, a sudden, powerful impulse diverted him.

His gaze drifted to the window, where the birds flitted about in the branches of the ancient oak tree. His focus followed a leaf as it fell to the ground. He thought about the upcoming football game, the prospect of playing and moving. He knew he should start the assignment, but there was a certain allure to not doing so. He leaned back in his chair, feeling the cool pressure against his spine. The air in the room felt thick and slow.
