The notice arrived in a crisp white envelope, a stark contrast to the faded paint on Harold’s mailbox. "Proposed Fence Installation," it declared in bold, black letters. He sighed, the sound a slow release of air as he sank deeper into his armchair. The sun was warm, the television was on, and the thought of engaging with anything, let alone a neighbor's project, felt… arduous.

He considered the implications. Mrs. Gable's fence would likely block his view of the park. He knew he should probably read the entire document, understand the setbacks and the permits. Instead, he reached for the remote, finding solace in the rhythmic drone of a daytime talk show.

Later, the doorbell’s insistent buzzing brought a frown to his face. "Harold?" Mrs. Gable chirped from the porch, holding a brochure filled with images of pristine picket fences. He squinted through the peephole, then slowly retreated, pretending to be utterly preoccupied with the rustling of a particularly interesting houseplant.
